How huge is huge?

I’m currently paying about CAD$1300/year for a 2007 Ford Focus.

that’s just karma, for saying you wanted to sell the Twingo.

$1300 a year? I’d kill for that!

Kinja'd!!!0

But if you killed for that, you’d get arrested and have to spend many times that on lawyers!

:-)

And note, that’s with full coverage and a $1000 deductible... and no deductible when it’s the other person’s fault.

Having a cheap/common car that is also a wagon typically means cheaper insurance.

Fair play.

Even if I were to get a Civic of any year, I’d be looking at at least $1700. Such is the life of a 21 year old.

$432 US a year for my 4Runner, and that’s with full coverage and roadside assistance.

I’m 42... which makes insurance cheaper... but I live in the Toronto area, which makes insurance more expensive.

If you can get insurance for less than $2000 while you’re male and under 25 in Canada or the US, it’s a good deal.

Before you get any car, call your insurance. And I suggest you look into getting the wagon version of the Focus/Escort. Saturn wagon and the PT Cruiser (non-turbo) are likely to be cheap to insure/operate as well.

Minivans are likely to be cheap to insure as well... but will have higher operating costs.

Also a Corolla is likely to be cheaper to insure compared to a Civic.

No doubt the answer will just make me depressed but define “huge”. Yesterday I actually managed to find a car I could insure for around £1,000 and of course it is one I really don’t like.

I saw gasoline at CAD$0.92 on my way to work today... and the price is supposed to drop by 6 cents tonight.

Of course that’s per liter, not per gallon.

And it works out to about US$2.45 per US gallon.

About a grand to switch my current policy to the Mondeo. So basically £1000 from now to July on top of my current premium. Ouch.

Okay that’s worse than what I was expecting. Why won’t the insurance companies let us have torque or in my case back seats. Pretty much anything I try is £2000+ except for the Smart Car (I don’t have a deathwish) at £900 or £1200 for an MX5 (A car I really don’t like). I need to move.

I’ve always found that confusing about yurope.

Used car prices are dirt cheap, because insurance is so high, but because used cars are so cheap, shouldn’t insurance adjust down?

After all if the car is only worth 1000 euros/pounds, it would seem it should be cheap to insure since if it gets in a collision you just write the car off as a total loss and have socialized healthcare pay for any medical bills.

What am I missing here?

Yeah, I’ve compared rates between my Ottawa address and Toronto address, and Ottawa is way cheaper.

Really, if I can get any insurance for under $2500 a year, I’ll be happy. Hopefully being on my mum’s plan with no accidents or tickets will help when the day comes.

Third party liability? If you hit someone and paralyse them the settlement is likely to be in seven figures. You can be in this situation no matter what kind of car you have and the younger you are and the more powerful the car the higher the risk is going to be judged to be. Even if the liability is only for damage to a third party’s property the same applies.

If you’re someone with a low value car you’re not going to be insuring it comprehensively so the value of your own car is almost irrelevant.

That’s what sucks a lot with England... car insurance! I mean I was paying 1000 cad to insure a 5.7L 305hp Corvette... full coverage, 500$ deductible. And I also clearly told them that I would drive it in winter, in the snow...

Can you get a quote to see how much this would cost you in England? 1995 Base manual Corvette

I feel so sorry for you. Move to the colonies, where my Triumph project car is fully insured as a classic car for $7 a month! or my DD 2.5V6 mazda is insured for a grand total of $600 per year, and insured in the name of an 18 year old male. Second hand cars aren’t as cheap and my deductible is $1050 but i would hate to have to pay what you do.

You used to live in mtl?

Quebec has the lowest insurance rates, since our private insurance only covers material damage. If you hurt someone, that’s covered by the state. You pay for it every year for your plates and insurance.

My 2014 pathfinder is fully covered and I got basic insurance on my 97 jeep for under 800.00 a year.

Kinja'd!!! uofime-2 > Cé hé sin
01/08/2016 at 21:14

Kinja'd!!!0

True, but the low used car values goes both ways. Assuming the vehicle age mix is similar there’s a good chance you’re hitting another cheap car.

How litigious are people there that liability needs to be that much?

You surely are not going to argue that a 2l diesel mondeo a particularly high risk car?

Kinja'd!!! Flavien Vidal > Wacko
01/09/2016 at 01:31

Kinja'd!!!0

Yes, MTL... So you have to add the 450 CAD I was paying per year to get the car registered as this is also part of the insurance. So “real” total was more like 1450 CAD a year.

Kinja'd!!! Cé hé sin > uofime-2
01/09/2016 at 05:03

Kinja'd!!!1

The underwriters certainly thus argue. A Mondeo, diesel or not, will cost a young driver much more than something like a Fiesta, and (s)he mightn’t even get a quote.

And as I said personal injury claims are a big part of insurance payouts. Insurance policies have (by law) unlimited third party liability, something I understand isn’t the case in America.

Kinja'd!!! Cé hé sin > Flavien Vidal
01/09/2016 at 05:05

Kinja'd!!!1

Are you comparing like with like? Insurance in the EU includes compulsory unlimited third party liability. Is that the case in Canada?

Kinja'd!!! Flavien Vidal > Cé hé sin
01/09/2016 at 05:18

Kinja'd!!!0

Check the answer I’ve given after... In Quebec, just the mere fact of having a license plate means that you are covered in case of physical damages to someone (if you hit a pedestrian for exemple, that is covered by your “license plate insurance”). This won’t cover any damages done to somebody else’s property though, so you need the extra insurance.

So in reality, I guess we can say that getting the Corvette on the road for 1 year, fully insured and plated, cost me 1450 CAD (940€). It wasn’t unlimited, but I had something like 3 millions dollar of property damages if I recall correctly :)

Reply to an old post, I know, but still:

This isn’t a European wide problem. It’s a UK one. My daily costs about €25 a month in insurance. I insured my first car in 2010, got my drivers license in 2001. So I’m not a young driver, but I haven’t got that much history either.

Downside: road tax is high in my country. €95 a month for my heavy daily, €20 for my light weight 1980s hot hatch.

Location: The Netherlands.

Kinja'd!!! uofime-2 > duurtlang

Kinja'd!!!0

interesting, the road tax is understandable. Does that mean you don’t have that tax rolled into your fuel prices?

Kinja'd!!! duurtlang > uofime-2
01/28/2016 at 18:23

Kinja'd!!!1

We have a lot of tax rolled into our fuel prices, but the ownership tax is levied on top of that. For reference: Gasoline is €1.35 a liter ($5.60 a US gallon) at the cheapest places, diesel €0.95 a liter ($3.94/gal). Today. Neighboring Germany is a lot cheaper. Fuel is about €0.10-0.15 a liter cheaper and road tax is considerably lower for everything but tiny cars.

Cars are cash cows for the government here. But at least we’ve got cheap insurance. And decent infrastructure (I’m unfamiliar with potholes).
